Following in the footsteps of four successfully organized trade fairs on the subject of bioenergy in China, the fifth event addressing the topic of decentralized energy supply – the Sino-German BioEnergy Annual Conference – took place in Yangling, near Xi’an from 15 – 17 October 2014. Nearly 400 participants from 32 provinces including Chinese rural energy agencies, both German and Chinese bioenergy companies, researchers and national and international experts attended the conference. The conference included the annual meeting of China Biogas Society and attracted decision makers from every province of China and almost all private biogas companies. The event is a unique platform for the bioenergy business.

Thanks to the regional availability of renewable raw materials, the production of energy from biomass ranks high in the decentralized energy supply sector. The use of biomass boosts local value chains, promotes the development of rural areas and contributes to minimizing environmental problems. This is the case in China too, for example, where the target is to cover around 13 percent of electricity consumption from non-fossil sources by 2017. This will also accelerate the market for renewable energies. This year’s International Conference offers German and international exhibitors the opportunity to demonstrate technologies and their use in practice and to provide information about new trends.

The Conference is part of a series that has been organized jointly with the China Biogas Society (CBS) since 2010. The event is regularly attended by more than 300 participants. The framework has been kept deliberately moderate in size to give the event a flair of exclusivity and it guarantees exhibitors direct access to all the topical areas of bioenergy in China’s booming market. The 12th five-year plan stresses that in the coming years bioenergy output is to reach the equivalent of around 50 million tons of coal. This statement encourages the actors in the field to invest further in better and more efficient technologies, training and consultancy services.

German companies displayed their latest technology and had the opportunity to meet their Chinese counterparts and exchange expert knowledge. In his speech, Mr Wang Jiucheng, Director of the Rural Energy and Environment Agency from the Ministry of Agriculture, addressed the high investment interest in the China Biogas sector and the importance of German contributions in technology transfer.

In her welcome note, Managing Director of AgroTechService, Ms Zhang Li, was delighted that the Sino-German BioEnergy Annual Conference was attended by German companies and is looking forward to welcoming even more at next year’s event, to be held in Guangzhou in the south of China in November.
